Live CD type of Linux is my fav; Win XP comes close to me, after using Live CDs for all these time I dislike any OS that had to be installed to HD before use, Linux especially.

Windows XP SP2 is the common medium due to its ability to have both supported programs and frequent usage by others.
Although there are issues with windows that go beyond common repair. I Would look at the new Fedora Release of Linux or even Ubuntu's newer versions.
If your a die hard Linux fan I have heard good things about both
PCLinux and Dreamlinux.
