I grew up in the Northwest, but have lived in South Texas for many years. I love the way people talk here. Texans are expressive and are great story tellers, direct and to the point. And baby, you have never been flirted with until a smooth cowboy throws a few sweet words and a wink or two your way. In business, I speak and write very formally. But at the end of the day, I can kick off my shoes and talk S#!% with the best of them. I agree with you on George Bush... but he is not representative of the many great Texans I have grown to love over the years. The late Ann Richards was a jewel. She would not have been the same without her accent and big hair.

Working in The Great Northwest Washington for a company in Ft. Worth, Texas, I get the "privilege" of dealing with people with the "Texan" accent. I have come to this conclusion:
It's great on the right people, terrible on the rest!
I have the blessing of not being exposed to it constantly, though. And George Bush as an example for anything other than destruction from the inside out is a bad example. I would not claim him if he were from Washington!

I was born in Oregon, and raised in Texas. I have no accent as weird as that may sound. When I am with my southern friends they say I have no accents. But when I visit my family out of state they say I sound like a texan. I don't like the slow drawn out talk either. But I say Yall a whole lot. It's in my vocabulary. i can't even think of another word to replace it with. My family in connecticut say yous guys. That annoys the crap out of me. lol

I've lived north of Dallas my whole life and never got the dreaded Texas drawl. I know a lot of people who do have it though. It doesn't bother me.

I think every state and town have different accents. Personally I dislike many of them. I live in N. Alabama and don't mind it here as it is mixed by people from all over who caught some of the southern accent.
I really dislike hearing men speak southern. Just sounds unprofessional to me and many I know in the biz. world.
I have watched movies that are from where I grew up and it can be annoying to hear them destroy our home town accent.

It sure sounds better than an howling monkey. It's kinda like a leprechaun on drugs.
