There are more then a few answers for you here. I want to say I had the distinction of fighting next to the Aussies in 'Nam. They were the best of the best and I'll always remember them with a kindness in my heart. I will always feel like they were my brothers.

Why Australia (and New Zealand) became involved in Vietnam was because of the ANZUS treaty, which is a pact between Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. to cooperate on defense matters in the Pacific Ocean area. This treaty started in World War II to protect Australia and New Zealand from further Japanese aggression. It has since evolved into Australia assisting the U.S. worldwide, while New Zealand has all but completely backed out of supporting the treaty altogether.

Adding to the reason for Australia involvement in the Vietnam War was the spread of communism in the region (a.k.a. the "Domino Effect"). Communism was a real and direct threat to Australia at one time, because Australia would have been geographically isolated from friendly countries and at high potential risk of being invaded by hostile forces again. Vietnam had the fifth largest army in the world at one time, which was much larger than Australia's military.

Australia left the Vietnam conflict for much of the same reason why the U.S. did. Public opinion in Australia changed considerably over the several years of involvement in Vietnam. Also, democracies in neighboring countries had time to grow, sustain themselves and buffer Australia from any communist threats. Long story short - it became unpopular and unnecessary for Australia to be involved in Vietnam.

For the same reason we're in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The United States wanted us there.
So our stupid politicians agreed.
