A large nuclear weapon's arsenal was only an advantage when facing a strong opponent like Russia during the cold war. It was built so even if we were attacked, we could still have enough surviving weapon to strike back. In today's world we only need a few to deter a nuclear attack on one of our cities, but we have them and we can't get our act together to get rid of the ones we don't need. Nuclear weapons are only useful as a deterrent, not as an offensive weapon, because the first use would cause condemnation world wide, and we can cause an equivalent amount of damage using lots of ordinary bombs,
Other countries also have nuclear weapons, India, Pakistan, China, Israel, France,UK and Russia. and they are not as influential as the US. Our real power comes from the fact that we have the largest economy in the world, about the size of all of Europe and that we spend more on conventional military forces that everyone else in the world combined.

Nuclear weapons gives the US an advantage in military strength; that is, we can blow up anyone at any time. Having this gave the US large amounts of military power, making other countries nervous and more willing to deal and negotaiate with us politically and economically. Theory is that a friend would not bomb a friend.......

There are plenty of other reasons we are very influential in the world astage and it is only coinsidental that we have lots of nukes, Examples:
1) we are the richest nation
2)every country in the world depends on our $ for trade
3) We invented democracy(after a 2000 year hiatus)
4) We saved the Euros 3 times in the kast hundred years

It gives you serious leverage. Nations don't attack countries with nuclear weapons. It's a deterrent.
