Well I know the correct answer, but I'm not sure if it misses the point of what you are asking >.<

In my anatomy class they went over the evolutionary basis for the mouth and nose being separeted (so humans could eat a lot of food and be able to breathe at the same time).

From that, I also assumed the following was true.
With ears, due to how sound waves travel, its somewhat necessary to have one on either side, since a ears hearing worsens dramatically on the opposite side. Also it's easy enough for an ear to get ripped off and mangled, and by having two you don't lose hearing. Finally, humans (or most animals for the matter) are naturally bilaterally symmetrical, so two ears have always existed.

Assuming you don't want the evolutionary answer, the alternative one (listening is more important than speaking) is pretty true and a good anecdote to use :P

You dont need an extra mouth to shovel food or talk through but? You need both ears to hear. Even if you cant hear outta one either. Even if ? YOU are deaf. I might not hear everything I can still have that concept of the ears.So...? the ears are the mouth,, without that you have eyes.. without you would make do with what you have. Hear, see, taste and touch. Most of us see, and hear. Dont look a gift horse in the mouth. We all have a mouth and we have to feed our bodies.Sometimes we just want to listen to what we want to hear and to hell with the rest. U.. think?

You need two ears to locate where the words are coming from, but only one mouth to direct your speech to someone who is not listening.

Well now Martha, in my case if it were the other way around, I would only listen half as well as I do now and I'd say twice as much stupid crap.
