Dogs, no question. Don't get me wrong, I love all animals, and have several species roaming about the house, but dogs are by far the best.

I see the worthless dog haters are out in force. I hope your cats know how to rescue from drowning, or protect you from violence, or pull you out of a fire, or be loyal...MY DOGS DO!!!

Depends...

For instance: Where do you live (apartment, rent a house, own a house, big backyard, city, country, etc.)

Also: Preference and Allergies (many people are allergic to cats and dogs, yet many people want companion pets, others want something they can cuddle sometimes but otherwise do not have to give TOO much attention, and others want something small and quite that doesnt cost too much).

I LOVE dogs, they are companion animals and can becoem your best friend. If you live in the country they can keep other critters away from your home and maybe add a little extra protection. In the city they can be a bit of a hassle, expensive and loud. You may recieve lots of complaints from neighbors and have a fear of your dog being put in the pound or put to sleep if it gets loose and for whatever reason bites someone.

CATS are very independent, and have strong personalities. You may be lucky to get one that is a lap kitty, other wise they do not care too much for people and like to do their own thing. They also can keep rodents like mice, gophers and other pest to a minimum whether in the city or country BUT, in the city you worry about your cat getting away and being ran over and someone else adopting it as their own.

RABBITS, GUINNE PIGS, HAMSTERS are small animals who mostly live in a cage. They are ideal for apartment living and usually allowed in a pet friendly apt. building or rental complex. They are not usually lovey lovey animals though, and not always all to cuddly but they ARE quiet and do not cost much to keep and rabbits for instance, usually love to play with your feet and be pet a lot, lol.

BIRDS are also minimal cost usually, but they are VERY NOISY!! lol. They look cool and some can do nifty things like talk, but otherwise they are NOT companion animals.

GOATS, HORSES, COWS, PIGS are usually considered farm animals, and although horses and goats can be considered slightly companionistic... usually they are not. I have had a pet goat, and a pet pony and my younger sister has a pet horse, unless you are into just having a free lawn mower (goats, horses and cows) or like to horse back ride or are raising for profit (to breed or butcher ((sorry activists)) )... maybe not a great idea. They are also expensive to BUY and MAINTAIN... and require a lot of land... about 2 acres for one horse approx. and 3 to 4 acres per cow. Goats require a little less land, but they will eat all the grass and create a dirt pasture if too small an area.

Again, all depends on your preference I think, but thats my Two Cents.

Cats are differently the easiest pets to take care of all you have to do if buy them food and a cat box and litter. They don't require as much special needs as a dog, turtle fish or bird do.
Dogs need a lot of stuff and if you buy a puppy require a lot of hard work. To train them, walk them, play with them and constantly be hope to let them outside to the bathroom.
I have two dogs and a cat and I love them dearly but I recommend that you pick a pet that goes best with how much time you have to give to them! : )

I have a border collie mix. She was my first dog and I have to tell you I dont think Id switch breeds. She is the smartest most loving and protective animal. She is wonderful around children and not too hyper like most.

The ones you've researched, read books about, and know how to care for.

The ones you can afford. That includes emergency vet bills!

The ones that are spayed/neutered, socialized and trained to behave.

The ones you're going to commit to, even when they are sick, old and not fun anymore.

Get whatever you want, just be a good owner.
