This is my second baby and I never sat around at 4 cm with her in fact I was only at 1cm when I was admitted to the hosptial with my 1st daughter , this seems wierd to be 4cm and not in the hospital

Active labor is not just judged on how far dilated you are. Usually they call 4cm active labor only if you've been contracting and progressed to the point of being 4 cm. Most women go into labor before reaching 4cm, but on occassion, women like you will dilate that far and not be in labor.

Active labor is when you are contracting every 2-5 minutes and there has been cervical change noted from the previous exam, and you are at least 4cm.

It's normal to be more crampy and have pelvic pains as baby moves lower, especially if you had a pelvic exam recently.

It could happen at any time! Good luck, and congrats in advance!

*edited to add:
MOST of the time second babies come more quickly, because the uterus and cervix have done this job before and the cervix usually dilates more easily. Pushing is usually shorter, too. But there's no guarantee. Still, being 4cm, I wouldn't wait too long before going to the hospital after labor starts, because you could progress quickly.

Active labor is 4cm with contractions. The pressure you feel is the baby's head coming down. Sounds like there's a chance you won't make it to wed. I did the same thing for my last baby. Went into labor 2 days before induction within hours after an internal exam. It's not weird, contraction in your case may not start until your water breaks. So keep a look out. Try walking around every five minutes or completing something you've been meaning to do. I've heard of a lot of women going into labor after finishing something they've been meaning to do, including me. good luck!

If your contractions are regular and getting stronger and are about 3-5 minutes apart then you are in active labor.

It's is not as common to be 4 cm for that long and not be in labor, but it happens.

I always have cramping and pain after an exam and have read it is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

In my experience my subsequent babies were born faster than my first. My labors and pushing phases have gotten progressively shorter and I hope this will be the same for you!

All the best

It could be from the exam, it could be the baby's head pushing on your cervix.

The first stage of active labor starts when the cervix is about 3 cm to 4 cm dilated

38 weeks and being induced? WHY? Most doctors would wait until at least your due date to consider induction, NOT before. Are there medical complications?

It's possible that your doctor, while performing your internal exam, also attempted to 'strip your membranes" to get labor going. Again, I'm not sure why your doctor would do so, being that you still have 2 weeks to go to your due date, but he's your doctor.
The reason they are probably making you wait even though you are 4 cm is because you're not necessarily in "active labor"...you are dialated enough but possibly not having regular contractions to signal that you are in true labor, it sounds like you're in latent labor phase.
Active labor usually starts at 4 cm...your entire situation there is quite strange, to be honest.
Good luck on your induction!
