There is a book entitled "The cult of the born-again virgin" by Wendy Keller (1999) who claims that millions of people are turning to celibacy once agan and turning away from meaningless sex.
Since you're asking about abstinence and not virginity, I would say the number is higher then what my other YA! respondants have indicated.
There are "virginity pledges" that people take as well (although I hear the rate for those pledging is high, the percentage for breaking this pledge is even higher).
If you google born-again virgins you might find some recent stats.

Who knows? I say, just protect yourself. People who wait till they are married deserve the dread of getting stuck with somebody they are not sexually compatible with.
