I'm applying to 10 schools. I want to ask for "another" reccomendation for "an 11th school". However, my true purpose is that I am not going to apply to the 11th school for sure. Is it bad that I use the 11th one to my advantage and open it up to see what my counsler wrote? I was planning to do the same thing with my other teachers.....(tell them to write 11)
I really am curious to see what they wrote!

First of all I don't think they would write anything bad. Teachers won't waste an hour of their time writing bad things about you; they're not out to get you, if they don't like you they'll probably tell you to look elsewhere.
Second, most teachers send their letters directly to the colleges, not to you so I don't see how you would get them in the first place.
Third, if you do get them, I wouldn't open it because no good can possibly come of it. A guidance counselor who expects you to not look at the letter isn't going to listen to your suggestions about what to write.

Well first I would consider if you are FOR SURE going to apply to the 11th school. If you are absolutely not for sure, make certain though, then I would open it. But just make sure you don't want to apply to that 11th school. I would encourage you to apply to the 11th school.

It certainly makes sense to do this.
I remember when in high school, there were six of us sitting in a waiting room, each with our files in our hands. All of us were interviewing for an internship, and our teachers' recommendations were in the folders we were holding. I read mine, which were (fortunately) very nice. I read the guy's next to me, and his were AWFUL! I wondered why the teachers didn't just say that they wouldn't give him a recommendation, instead of trashing him to the level that they had done.
He was afraid to look, so I didn't tell him what it said. I did feel sorry for him, though.

Sounds like a good plan. By seeing what they wrote you can see if your getting into the school you want. You can also see what they really think about you. Hard part is you can't act like you know what they wrote about you.

Do not do it because then you will be more worried about getting in, you applied to a lot, hopefully you will get in. IF its that big of a deal if you are really close to the teacher maybe they will let you see it.

That is a pretty good idea. But, I would never do it. It took my professors an hour just to complete 4 recommendations, this takes quite a lot of their time.

This is deceptive and sleazy! Someone should tell your counselor and teachers to rescind your letters, because you are not worthy of a reference. Shame on you!

that seems kinda dishonest just to see what your teachers are writing about you. But i guess it does make sense.
