Its never about just the car but a combination of the car and driver. A good manual driver in a corvette can beat an automatic driver in a BMW 760 but has to shift PERFECTLY. No slip ups. The cars must also be comparable/Equal class.
The pro manual driver can still drive the automatic car and win but the Automatic driver may not be able to drive the Manual car and may lose.
Its the combo of Driver/Car.

The automatic will shift faster than a manual trans, but at a cost, you lose some horsepower through the torque converter.
In some racing applications a manual trans is used in conjunction with an air shifter and a computer. The computer shuts off ignition for a split second to allow synchronization of the gears to prevent damage.
Some other transmissions use planetary gear units to give multiple ratios, again an air shifter is used but in a different way. Ratio change and gear reversing is done by stopping or releasing different components in the planetary gear assembly. Automatics use planetary gear assemblies.
Shifting your stock vehicle without a clutch is only wiping out the synchronizers and killing the trans, it's just a matter of time before it scatters. (a short time)

The reason usually has to do with a manual having more gears, therefore they can be shorter/closer and that helps acceleration. The reason why an Audi R8 is faster than the same thing in a car with an automatic is because they have it where you can shift the gears individually. My Volkswagen has it too - it's called DSG. In all fairness, DSG shifts more quickly than the best built up transmission in the same car (Jetta GLI).

That was the case a while ago, but now automatic transmissions perform very well, and in some rare cases are even faster than manual transmission. Also, if you are not a very skilled manual driver, than automatic will definitely perform better. The best solution would be to get a steprtonic transmission, one in which you have the option of switching between automatic and manual modes without the use of a clutch.

usually on the street, a manual trans "feels" faster. but most of the time, on the dyno, two identical cars(one manual, one auto) the auto has a little less horsepower and torque compared to the manual. On the strip, the manual is usually slower by a few tenth's because it leaves a large margin for human error. such as, take off, what rpm u shift at and how long it takes u to shift. In an auto, you can take off with minimal burnout(which kills 1/4 mile times) and it does all the shifting

I'm sure that your car is fast, but I doubt that you are matching the RPM's as well as you say/think and the question in your case "Will be which one will last longer?". I think that the reason you can't find 4th is because its laying on the road somewhere behind you. The rest of the gears will be there too soon
