There isnt any lights on the dash but it seems very hot and smells a little like burnt rubber. It happend when I drove somewhere and then didnt happen on the way back. Also it sounded like metal hitting metal when i drove over like the engine was grinding. Any suggestions?

top radiator hose is suppose to be hot, check fluid levels when engine is cold, the radiator and oil, then check transmission with vehicle running and put in neutral (with parking break on).

Have you ever changed the coolant? You should do that every 5 years at the most. If you have never replaced the thermostat now would be a good time. Is the fan turning on? Make sure you see it spinning when the car is hot. Are the radiator fins clogged with bugs? That is about all their is to maintaining the cooling system.

Sounds like the Thermostat Should Be Replaced, Sticking at times. Hoses were starting to melt, Replace! It was starting to be an Overheat but it was just "On The Boarder-Line" and never got high enough to turn the light on. You Lucked Out, start checking the complete cooling system!

I had this problem once and wouldn't believe the solution if I hadn't seen it for myself.

I had this awful smell of burning plastic/rubber and looked under the hood. Couldn't see anything wrong.

Finally took it to my mechanic. He looked underneath the car. A plastic bag had got stuck to the hot exhaust pipes and just stayed there stinking when the car got warmed up.

I couldn't scrape it off so I had to just wait until it burned off. It took a couple of weeks.

Metal to metal grinding noise coming from the engine can be an alternator bearing or a A/C compressor starting to fail

Don't trust the light. Check the fluids (when cool)
