Democrats believe in Big govt with high tax rates and numerous social programs, they generally believe that govt creates Americas prosperity and not the private sector. They believe in amnesty for all immigrants.
Republicans believe in a small govt, lower tax rates, as the believe that a powerful govt will trample a mans rights. They believe that the private sector will create prosperity as they have an incentive to be more efficient than the govt. They believe in a proper immigration channel and they are not for amnesty.

Republicans believe that a free market can provide almost everything that a civilization needs in the most efficient manner possible, and the government should stay out of its way. Many republicans also believe in Social Darwinism, in which the poor, ill, and elderly should suffer the consequences of their condition without assistance as a way of strengthening society and serving as a example for others.
Democrats believe that unrestrained capitalism has caused great harm on society in the past and business needs to be held to responsibility by laws, much the same as people. They believe that because the disparity of power between a corporation, or great wealth, and an individual worker is so great, the government must protect the interests of the individual.

If you read some of the answers about Conservatives favor more freedom, they perhaps they can explain why they do not favor the freedom of a woman's right to choose or the freedom for homosexuals to marry?
If Conservatives favor smaller Government, perhaps they can state why the Conservatives currently in office have not made Government any smaller?
The true definition of liberal and conservative views is that liberal views are more open-minded to change, while conservative views are more traditional minded.

Democrat and republican are political parties.
Conservative and liberal are political ideologies.
Most democrats are liberals, while most republicans are conservatives. There are of course grey areas. Some republicans are considered liberal and some democrats conservative.
There are two basic principles in political ideology. Social issues (gay marriage, banning immoral behavior, etc.) and Fiscal/economic issues (taxes, gov. spending, etc.).
Conservatives are usually on the right side of the political spectrum. Fiscal issues: Less taxes, smaller government, less government spending, against too many social programs like welfare and more for personal responsibility, etc. Social issues: against gay marriage, against abortion, against immoral and alternative life styles.
Liberals are usually on the left of the political spectrum. Fiscal issues: More taxes, bigger government, more social programs like welfare, less personal responsibility. Social issues: Pro abortion, pro gay marriage, pro alternative lifestyles.
Here's a political test to see what your political ideology is.
