How much real work is involved in being a city councilmen?

Ive been thinking of running, I don't have a job and I heard that you get money for being on one, and really have nothing better to do.

I really do want to make a difference, I live in Concord NC, and in case you live here, there was this huge story about the Lowe's Motor Speedway, and Burton Smith. Basically the Council played right into there hands and cost the city alot of money.

So If I decide to go though with this what am I in for.

Campaign properly so that you will be elected as Councilman to effectively make laws for the city and you must not be interested in getting commissions on projects funded by laws passed by the council so that you will be elected again.
