I like to change my mattress every 3 years. I flip it once a month though so it doesn't wear out too fast.

If it's a cheap mattress, it might only last a couple of years. You should probably flip it every so often, unless you have a type of mattress that can't be flipped (if it's different on the top than on the bottom.)

I heard a good "rule" once about mattresses. Just remember "Spring spin, Fall flip." When you change your clocks for daylight savings (it's coming up soon,) flip your mattress over. Then, when you change your clocks in the spring, spin your mattress around (so that the "head" is now at the "foot.") Every 6 months, you'll be sleeping on a different part of your mattress (4 different ways). Then it won't wear out so quickly.

I have heard it's good to change your mattress every 10 yrs. If it's a good/excellent mattress. Or if it becomes uncomfortable.. I rotate/flip my mattress every 6 months per the manufacturer instructions and to vacuum and clean it properly.. I also like to have a barrier between me and the mattress via a cover that I can wash to prevent staining/spills etc... Also, I've heard that on avg. dustmites will double the weight of an ordinary mattress in 10 yrs... GROSS !! So, if you have allergies it's a good idea to change your mattress or at the very least have an allergen cover around it.

Interesting question. I have a guest bed with a mattress that is about 27 years old. I have a newer mattress (8 or 9 years) in my bedroom that is foam and was very expensive. About a year ago my back started hurting badly. The window AC is in the guest room so I went in there to sleep one night and woke up with my back feeling fine! So I've switched bedrooms/beds. Who would think a 25+ year old mattress would be better but it is. It's a Serta Perfect Sleeper.

Just bought a new Sealy mattress after 4 years of the old one.

re: turning the mattress - the owners manual for the Sealy states that you should turn the mattress every two weeks for the first 3 months.

Have heard that it is good to change every 10 years or so, but should flip them over every month.
