The clerk said that they don't prosecute unless it is $25. Isn't there something that they could do. I mean if he eats a donut every day for free it will eventually mean a substantial loss for the company. What if we all did that?

He may really not have the money, OR he may just be a jerk. Either way, if the shopowner is willing to overlook it, so shd you! There are a lot of hungry people surviving out there.

I worked at a large dept store that found it to be a smaller liability (so I was told) for them to allow theft than to prosecute for a certain amount of walk out items. It REALLY surprised me, but it depends upon the amount of loss, I guess.

I'm guessing the guy really can't pay for the donut and still have enough money to survive the day, so the store clerk is doing him a favor and (the rest of the customers) by letting him and not saying anything. Lots of these places throw ought day-old stock nowadays (or donate them to soup kitchens anyway) so in a sense the thief is only accelerating the systems redistribution of giveaway donuts. At least he's not standing at the door begging for money, or stealing

something the store really can't afford to write off. and nobody really knows for sure how many donuts go missing on a shift because the clerks help themselves,

yes, it does cost more to prosecute than one donut is worth, and yes, the guy should find a way to pay for the donut, but I don't see anything here morally and ethically different than financing drug (rehab ) programs with pharmaceuticals payed for by tax payers to get people un addicted to street drugs(whose manufacturers never seem to get prosecuted no matter how much social damage they are doing)

What if we all did that? --- the company that owns the store would start giving donuts away and getting the cost back by inflating the price of something else they sell. C FO's aren't dumb, just socially illiterate.

No need to prosecute, just ring up the donut with the rest of the order. The clerk should be fired if he/she doesn't. Everyone else pays for theft, be it small or large.

If they have a sign posted in the store that says "we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone" then they can ban him from the store.
A lot of people eat a few grapes or a handful of candies from a bin in the grocery store, but this donut guy is really pushing the limit.

Maybe the guy thinks that since you see him eating the donut that you are adding it to what he buys. That makes sense and it never should have been an issue. You see him eating it so charge him when he gets to the counter. How hard is that?

Why don't you say something? I would, if I saw it. Especially every day.
