You could a=have a nice collection of African cichlids, I have a 75 gallon and have 20 in there, they do fine. I have good filtration though and that is so important. Whatever you do, no Oscars, you could possibly have a single one in your 55, but no others. African are great because they don't get huge, they come in many colors, and are aggressive. It's up to you but African cichlid look like your best choice. Check out my African cichlid tank, I have added a few more fish since this video too.

30 gallons is really too small for most cichlids. Whoever mentioned oscars is very misinformed, as they get 12"-14" long and should not be kept in anything under 55 gallons at all.

Some nice new world cichlids you could look at are rams, especially the German Blue (my fave!). I also really like cockatoo dwarf cichlids, as they are GORGEOUS and don't get very big (males only get 3.5" and females are even smaller). Jack Dempseys are always nice, but they do require a larger tank (55 gallons minimum).

Some gorgeous fish that many people don't even know are cichlids include angelfish and discus, and you could definitely make these guys work in a 30 gallon. Good luck with everything!

-Edit: I'm just giving you options with new world cichlids, if you wanted to look at African cichlids there are still a great variety of options!

If you want Cichlids, make sure you get the smaller ones because the Oscars can grow up to 10 inches or more! It wouldn't be good for a 30 gallon tank for 4 Oscars! Get the 55G, and maybe put three big ones in there!

You could put a few more. maybe of the smaller ones.

Great choice for choosing Cichlids, by the way! They're smart fish! I think they're gorgeous!
