Last month I was diagnosed with HPV, which came from a previous relationship. Since I'm now in a monogamous relationship with a different boyfriend, ever since I found out...we've been using condoms. Since we're going to be getting married eventually, how do I go about not getting re-infected. And does it clear up over time? I'm just curious because my first appointment for it isn't for another couple of weeks.

I had HPV as well. My OB-GYN actually performed a colposcopy on me where they scraped all the bad cells from my cervix. I followed up with paps every 3 months and it has never came back.

If your pap comes back clear then you are okay. If they decide to the do the biopsy and the scrape send me an email and I'll expain it more in detail. It's done there at the doctors office - not a big deal. However, I had some severe cramping for a few days after.

Also, check out www.webmd.com and see what they say.

Although condoms are good to use, they won't necessarily protect your boyfriend from also getting HPV. HPV is a virus that lives on the skin - including the surrounding skin (vulva) of your vagina. When you have sex your going to be skin to skin with your boyfriend which can give him the virus as well.

Now, HPV is a virus, which means that the symptoms can be treated but the virus does not go away. As far as being re-infected - you always will be infected. However, as far as not getting an outbreak goes, it's hit or miss. There isn't anything you can do to prevent an outbreak. Herpes has suppressive treatment, but at this time HPV does not have suppressive treatment.

When you go back for your appointment, I suggest you bring a list of questions you have and get them all answered then. Or save yourself some time and money and look it up in a medical dictionary at the library or see if you can do that online. I am sure a health clinic has booklets on many of the questions you have.

Another reason to abstain or if you must, then have safe sex only.

you will not get reinfected if you have unprotected sex with your partner. Since the strain came from you, it wont come back (unless it was going to do so eventually anyways). Also HPV does not affect males. They are just carriers, so they have nothing to worry about
