Most PhDs do not publish books -- they publish scholarly articles. They do not pay. Those who do publish text books don't make much money on them.

Many PhDs work as college professors. The better the school -- the better the pay. Those in professional schools make more than those in the arts.

To give you an idea of the difference, a friend of mine got his PhD a few years ago and got offers from highly ranked economics departments in the $70K per year range. But he also got offers from top business schools that were more in the $170K range.

Probably less than you think. I don't have the Ph.D., but I've published some books, and I don't think the Ph.D. subtracts from sales.

Over 300 books are published each day. Very few books actually make much money.
