A very liberal Conservative. Nixon was a very complex man, he was a Quaker which is a whole chapter in it's self. He was the first president to open the door and visit China, which would have been unthinkable for a Dem. When he lost to Kennedy, and being their was election fraud that would make Bush v Gore look like child's play. Old man Kennedy got the mob in Chicago to stuff the ballot box, they followed Al Capone rule, Vote early and vote often to a fine science. In the Johnston home town it was joked that even the dead voted. So Nixon knew that he could contested the election, but people were so in love with both Jackie and Jack it would make him look worse then the debate where his 5'o'clock shadow and his sweat made him look more like convict than a president.
So did bid this time and made a come back, and won the election 6 years or so later. Of course it was with a lie, he had no secret plan to leave Viet Nam with honor. For me and I did vote for him 1972, was never trust a man that wears a suit to the beach.

You cannot separate Nixon from Watergate or the secret bombings in Cambodia. That is the despicable legacy he created. My rating for his 6 years in office is unsatisfactory, I would give him a D-.
George W. Bush gets a F- for his 7 years in office.

I merely approximately hit abuse for insult yet He did some stable issues. Opened touch with China, tried to end the Vietnam warfare some questionable issues, maybe stable maybe undesirable yet he become a heavily disturbed character with worry of public and a protracted "enemies checklist" honest maybe maximum appropriate, no way ( via what diploma) even Eisenhower didn't wish him for V_P

Actually the Watergate break-in was just a small part of a much broader attempt by Nixon's reelection committee to undermine and sabotage the opposition's campaigns.
So I would rate Nixon not at all. He was a downright scheming criminal.
As President, he had good foreign policy. That's about it.

Nixon had many great achievements. However he was weak during Vietnam. He started out great with the bombing runs to cut down American losses. But he let the anti-war crowd dictate the rest of the war. As a result, it lasted longer than it should and we lost a lot of men we shouldn't have. As for Watergate, the crime was minor and just like President Clinton the one lie did him in.

Terrible, he ran on a platform of ending the Vietnam War. He told the country he had a secret plan. After being elected he continued the war until 1973. Lots of good men died for nothing. I will agree that his domestic policies weren't too bad. Fortunately for the country he quit before he could be impeached.

Nixon was a 'fair' President, particularly in matters of foreign affairs. However, personally he was a paranoid, vulgar, humorless, insecure man without personality or panache. -RKO- 10/22/07
