im having an ongoing debate with my friends. They play soccer and believe that baseball is a sport for lazy unathletic people. they think baseball takes no skill. as a baseball player i know they are wrong. Thier arguments are ridiculous and they are totally ignorant. point is i already have a good argument built up but i just wanted to know what you guys thought. do you believe baseball is harder to play then most people think? why? thanks, also if you could talk about why its better then soccer that would help my argument.

It is widely acknowledged that hitting a baseball is the most difficult thing to do in all of sport. Baseball also seems to be the only universal language spoken between fathers and sons, regardless of age.

I agree 100%. I've played baseball, tennis, basketball, and bowling in the 19 years that I have lived and hitting a baseball is BY FAR the hardest. Think of it this way, a major league baseball player is considered to be GOOD if he FAILS 7 out of ten times! That's insane. If a basketball player misses 7 out of 10 shots, that's awful. If a QB completes 3 out of 10 passes, he's riding pine. Yet like I said, if a baseball player can fail 7 out of 10 times throughout the course of a season, that's exceptional! Also, a 95 mph fastball gets to the catcher faster than the blink of an eye! They did a thing on sports science about that. I realize not every pitcher throws mid 90's, but practically all of them throw at least 90. Say what you want, but I picked up bowling and within 2 years I threw a perfect game (no joke). I started tennis my freshman year in high school, by the 11th grade, I made it to state. And basketball, to be good all you really need is athleticism. Hitting a baseball is hands down the hardest thing to do in all sports. Hitting a fastball is tough enough, but when a guy is throwing 90 plus with a nasty hook and a decent change, my God you're in for a battle. Just my opinion.

point out that the highest season batting average ever, a record that has stood for more than 50 years, still means only hitting safely 4 out of 10 times to the plate. a 40% sucsess rate is the holy grail of batting... and you could point out the fact that these guys play 6 games a week for a 6 month season, more if they make it to the playoffs, not even counting spring training.
soccer is also a physically demanding sport, it certianly requires greater endurance. but the comparison is difficult to make... baseball requires great coordination, explosive movement, and an ability to focus, in a game that at some levels works against focus. yes, baseball can be slow at times, but if you're out there you have to be able to focus on the game. just ask manny ramirez and benny agbaiani, its easy to lose track of things out there

Like the first person said, take them to a batting cage and have them try to hit those. They'll probably have a hard time figuring out how to hold the bat. Neither sport is better, they are equal. Both hard in different ways. Baseball just looks easy because it's a slower sport. Not all that running around like in soccer. Don't make them mad by saying baseball is better then soccer. That will make them even more ignorant. Also, go to a baseball field sometime, have them stand in the outfield while you hit pop flies to them, and have them try to catch them. Better let them try it out for themselves if they won't listen to you at all. Good luck!

No skill??? In just a fraction of a second a batter must decide whether or not to swing at a pitch which may be travelling 100 mph, sometimes it looks like it's coming right at your face, it could break hard, is it going to be in the strike zone, etc. All this runs through a hitters mind in the FRACTION of a second. Literally less than a second. Your preppy soccer friends are clueless.

All I have to say is when facing a 95 mph pitch you have .5 seconds or less to decide if you want to swing or not or even get out of the way of the pitch. Plus lets see if its easier to kick a 10 soccer balls into the goal or catch 10 MAJOR league fly balls

Now that we've all established that hitting a baseball is hard to do let's all go out an upgrade the level of difficulty ;let's try catching one and then making an accurate throw after the catch

hahaha this is pretty interesting. I pitch for varsity at my highschool. Baseball takes more skill than people give credit for. Look at how many people play soccer, how many really actually suck? Its not that hard to play, but it might be difficult to be really good. Now look at how many people play baseball, theres an incredible amount of people that full out suck! so theres an argument for u.

If u really wanna push it, have them play sometime with u.

ha well i hope that helped man

Throw something extremely hard at their heads, when they go down say "imagine that was a 90 mile an hour fastball not a bouncy little soccer ball" . . . then a day later hand them a baseball and tell them to hold onto it, walk away and come running up smashing into them as hard as you can, if they drop it scream out "SAFE!!!!" - that should give them the picture.

Point out that Michael Jordan, one of the most athletic basketball players ever, utterly failed at baseball.

It draws upon a different skill set. Pure athleticism is a great asset, but only gets one so far.

Baseball is easy to play, but very difficult to master and excel at the major league level.
