Interesting question, Peanut! I'm enjoying considering this.

IMO, the difference between a teacher and a mentor is largely in the mind of the "mentee" (did I just make that word up?--the person being mentored.) Sure, I think a teacher can be a mentor, but the mentee has to CHOOSE to consider him/her as such. I'm not sure you can assign yourself to be someone's mentor...I think the mentee decides who the mentor is, not vice-versa.

A mentor is someone who not only provides learning, but who models it, too. I've had many teachers from whom I learned a lot...but whom I'd never want to be like! When I remember my mentors, however, I remember wanting to be a lot like them~to live parts of my life they way they did.

What do YOU think, Peanut?

Mentors are people who are more experienced in a field and can guide a newer person in the area. It used to be required that a first year teacher have a mentor and it was great, but budget cuts took them out :(
