Get a gravel vaccuum like this (http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/10555/product.web ). WalMart has some cheap ones, or you can make one yourself with the top half of a plastic soad bottle and some tubing. This allows you to siphon out any debris that would continue to decompose and foul your water.

i have catfish and snails, but i also have a siphon tube..... the bottom is like 1" in diameter and the suction hose is like 1/4"..... being bigger at the bottom, it sucks the crud off the bottom, but the velocity isn't fast enough to carry the gravel on up into the hose...... and it "vacuum's" the gravel......

good luck!
