A really good book for starters, with pictures. It's soooo much easier to visually learn. The next is the web. OMG if you have any question it's there to be answered. I was once working on a pattern and I it said to knit in the row below. There was no instructions on how todo it so I just googled it. I typed in "knit in the row below" and wala tons of info. I just searched through it and found the one that helped the most. The next thing I did is was copy the page and put it a binder for future reference. I have a whole binder filled with instructions, patterns and all sorts of project ideas. So go ahead use the web. After all it's free. Also, try going to your local yarn store and see if they are having any classes. I'm not sure but I think some of the larger chains stores have a free "how to clinic". Good luck and happy knitting.

Depending on where you are located, most local yarn shops have classes or open knit nights where you can get advice. There are several great forums online as well. In addition to the sites already listed, I highly recommend knitters review as a good site to get basic information or help with a specific pattern.
