Govts are necessary because people are unwilling to take responsibility for their own lives and actions -- and because humans (as a species) cannot be trusted to act with compassion and respect for others.

They are protection rackets. If there were no governments, you would have roving bands of barbarians raping and pillaging. Come to think of it, maybe government isn't such a good thing, I might do alright in a world like that, probably be living higher up in the hierarchy than I am now (probably at the same relative level, but relatively wealthier since I would be able to take whatever I want from anyone weaker than me, I'm basing this on the physical and mental condition that I'm in now and the fact that my ancestors on both sides of my family lived in areas of major barbarian battles, including my grandfather's home town that was the site of a major battle in between Rome and Hannibal).

See why we have governments.

Just thought of another reason - lifespan is a lot longer than it was 500 years ago due to one simple thing - municipal sewers and water supplies. Municipal means government built.

the evolution of the 'state' as a method for people to live was gradual over our history, but remarkably consistent with the trademarks that exist in all states.

the main thing about states is that they are coercive.

you pay your taxes, or else.

you obey the law, or else.

you don't mess with the police, or else.

you don't drink before you are 21, or else.

you don't smoke weed, or else.

and if you organize and begin to gain power naturally, the state will take whatever action is necessary to stop you.

examples of states simply doing whatever is needed to ensure their own power can be seen in examples like the kent state murders, the killings at attica, the tieneman square massacre and on and on.

They're necessary for military. They are not necessary in taking people's hard earned money and giving it to bunch of lazy hobos and liberals so they can use for drugs.
