Thomas Holmstrom underrated?
He is considered by most players in the NHL as one of the dirtiest players. His name is on everybody's mind.
When you spend your entire life around the game, it is hard to consider players as underrated. Overrated yes, but underrated...tough.

In the league right now, probably Horton ( Panthers) or Cammalleri (Kings). On the Islanders, I would have to say DiPietro. He still doesn't get any credit because of that huge contract and the fact he has to live up to it. In his last three full seasons, he's 85-61-5-14, with a save% around .910 and a GAA around 2.75. Keep in mind he just turned 26. If the Islanders can finally get settled with a team and stop trading draft picks for guys who leave after a month, he could be an exceptional goalie.

Rod Brindamour. One of the hardest working players around and one of the best in all aspects of the game. Tough as nails, hard to beat one on one or along the boards, wins face-offs, hits, scores, is a great passer and will even drop the mitts and let you know what's up. A true leader on and off the ice. Was last seasons winner of the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the best defensive forward in the league and the year before that, he was sipping champagne as a Stanley cup champion.
I got to support the guy who said Horton ( Panthers) and Cammalleri (Kings). Those two players are also great underrated players these days.

For my team (Philly) I think I would say Timonen, pretty steady puck moving DMan who doesn't get much fanfare. I will be honest, I didn't even know he was so highly regarded prior to him becoming a FA. I knew he was good but when the lists of best available guys came out, to see his name at the top threw me off a little.
Yanic Perreault seems to be a guy who can't even get signed lots of times, teams not always knocking his door down but he puts up decent numbers and is one of the best, if not, the best face-off men in the NHL.
Robyn Regehr- Dion Phaneuf gets all the talk but if you talk to those in the know, Regehr has as many big games as Dion.
Nathan Horton and Zach Parise at this point could be considered somewhat underrated.
Any defensive specialist that is good, Pahlsson, Madden etc. qualify as well.

Giguere. Nobody ever would call him a Top 5 netminder in the league, but come the playoffs (when it counts)... is anyone better?
Holmstrom: Gets plenty of buzz and talk though I agree that his value is greater than most give him credit for...
Penner: Is OVER rated and OVER paid. More a product of a great Ducks team than being an overwhelming talent.

Chris Phillips. When he was Chara's defence partner all anyone ever talked about was Chara, but now that he doesn't have Phillips as a partner Chara's numbers are way down.
Phillips & Volchenkov now make what may be the best shut down defence pair in the NHL, and you mostly hear about Volchenkov's shot blocking and big hits, but very little about Phillips.

Daymond Langkow.
33 goals & 77 points last year, including a +22 rating, 44 penalty minutes, & 6 game-winners.
Already 8 goals & 12 points in 9 games so far this season.

Damn 2eighty8 stole my answer. Chris Higgins by far the best player the Habs have but you never hear about.
We also love Steve Begin here. He brings a great physical presence to a game and brings people to their feet at the Bell Center.

think its Ryan Clowe... he brings the all around game-- offense , tough grinding defense and will drop the gloves with anybody...
sure, he is already an established "go to" type of guy, but he is greatly overshadowed by Thornton and Marleau as well as the whole image of the sharks on ice product...
i have noticed its HIS work ethic that provides the scoring chances and turnovers that his teammates know how to convert a large part of the time...
so maybe he is too big of a name for this question, but i feel next to Thorntons contributions , this guy is really an unsung hero for the franchise...
BOB--- kudos on Timonen... and "I WAS WRONG" can we have him back in nashville please????
