The first thing to do is realise that it's not actually an adhesive as the name suggests. Instead, ostomy pastes are more a caulking agent designed to fill in any gaps and crevices between the skin, stoma and wafer.
Most people like to put a circle of paste directly around their stoma. This fills in any gaps between the wafer and the stoma. You can apply it directly to the skin or directly around the circle on the wafer, either way works.
If your skin under the wafer is uneven, you can use some paste to fill in those gaps too to give the wafer an even surface to stick to.
Hint: to stop the paste sticking to your fingers as you put it on, wet your finger tips :)
Eakin seals, Coloplast strips, Hollister strips, etc all do the same job as paste but are kinder to the skin, in my opinion, since they don't have alcohol in them to sting sore excoriated skin.
Good luck.
