Its like comparing Lego (Japanese cars) with Mega Blocks (American cars)... Everyone wants the Lego... pieces fit together better, reliable plastic and creates great models...
Duplo (Korean cars) are not bad too... Import quality, with prices in between...
Nothing bad with American cars. Throughout the years, my family owned a Horizon, Oldsmobile, Buick and Cavalier... Honestly thou, aside from the Oldsmobile, they all felt a little second class... the interior in most American cars really suck, especially the older ones. The resale of an import car will be greater then the domestic car. Right now we have 3 Hondas in our garage, CRV, Prelude and an Accord...
...but for the price, American cars aren't that bad...
My scale...
Lego Technic (European cars)
Lego (Japanese cars)
Duplo (Korean cars)
Mega Blocks (American cars)

I think it would be stupid to sit here and say that all imports are good and all American cars are bad.
With used cars, you have to take each one on its own. Have it checked out by a mechanic and let him make the decision of whether it is a good car or a bad one. I've seen Hondas and Toyotas sitting broken down on the side of the road as well as the Ford, Chevy, Dodges too.
Don't be afraid of buying an American car, you may actually find a good deal on a quality car.
good luck.
