This isn't an easy question to answer. There really needs to be more data. Someone like John Grisham or Steven King will make more money on a million copy bestseller than you would. They have a proven track record and are able to negotiate a better rate for themselves.

You on the other hand have a very long road ahead to get your book published and then get to market with it and then have it turn into a million copy best seller. You have to write a kick @ss book. This usually doesn't happen with your first. If you read about author's struggles, this doesn't happen until number 2 or 3 at best. Then you have to get someone's attention at a publishing house. This isn't easy. The best way is with an agent. The agent will take 10-15% of your earnings off the top. Even if you get someone's attention, the way a first contract is usually presented is a small advance (if any) that comes out of initial sales. Then there is the per book amount that is small for unknowns.

There are thousands and thousands of books published every year and only a handful will sell a million copies.

It wouldn't be worth losing friends over for me. The amount of money and the long struggle ahead would make me not write unless I just had to write because it was an innate drive in me to write. If it isn't all consuming and a burning desire for you to write, your chances of getting a book published are low.

You also have to beware of the scams and frauds along the way, from agents and publishers wanting to be paid up front, etc.

good luck!
