A friend of mine in another state (PA), I am in SC. She told me a story that happened to her and the more I thought about it the madder I became. I mean, its bad enough that INSURANCE COMPANIES TRY TO PLAY "DOCTOR" BY DENYING CERTAIN PRESCRIPTIONS! But she told me a doctor phoned in her prescription, and when she went to pick it up (on a Friday) the pharmacist told her he was NOT going to fill it! The Rx was by HER DOCTOR, and was APPROVED by her INSURANCE CO. WHAT RIGHT DOES THIS PHARMACIST HAVE TO DENY WHAT IS RIGHTFULLY HERS? She asked him "when" she could get it. He replies "MONDAY" AND SHE SAID TO HIM, "OK, MONDAY MORNING?" HIS REPLY WAS: "NO, MONDAY AFTERNOON!" This is my best friend in another state, and I was VERY UPSET THAT SHE WAS DENIED HER MEDICATION!!! SERIOUSLY, WHAT THE HECK IS UP WITH THIS??? DID ANYONE EVER HAVE THIS HAPPEN TO THEM. I AM REALLY CURIOUS AS TO WHERE THE PHARMACIST GETS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE HER MEDS??? PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND, SO I CAN RELAY TO HER.

please note: the pharmacy DID HAVE THE MEDS IN STOCK. AND HE COULD HAVE HAD IT READY IN A MATTER IF APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES. FOR SOME REASON, HE HAD A DEFINITE "ATTITUDE" WITH MY BEST FRIEND. FOR NO REASON AT ALL!!! WHEN SHE DID PICK UP HER MEDS TODAY (MONDAY) HE ALMOST SEEMED TO APOLOGIZE (AS IF HE KNEW HE WAS WRONG TO DO WHAT HE DID-REFUSE TO FILL THE RX ON FRIDAY) WHAT IF THIS WAS AN ELDERLY PATIENT WHO IN FACT NEEDED HER MEDS IMMEDIATELY - SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN SOL!!! WHAT GIVES? I JUST CANT UNDERSTAND WHAT GIVES HIM THE RIGHT TO DENY FILLING HER RX. ALL WAS LEGITIMATE!!! HE DID HAVE MAJOR ATTIDUDE WITH HER AND THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE FOR THIS. HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO THEM? I AM DISGUSTED WITH THIS PHARMACIST FOR DOING THIS TO MY BEST FRIEND, WITHOUT GIVING HER A REASON. ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE WHATSOEVER FOR THE ATTITUDE EITHER!!! PLEASE HELP!

You speak as though you were standing next to her even though you were in another state at the time? I think you are overreacting a LOT considering you weren't actually part of their conversation and don't know exactly what context the pharmacist said he couldn't fill it under. "Sorry ma'am, I need to contact the doctor before I can fill it for you, and since today is Friday that probably won't happen until Monday afternoon" turns into her coming home, calling you up POed "WTFOMFG HE SAID HE WASN'T GOING TO FILL IT FOR ME UNTIL MONDAY"

The pharmacist is there to make sure the medication is prescribed and filled correctly. Plenty of times a doctor calls something in on voicemail and it is inaudible, or the directions are totally screwed up because the doctor wasn't thinking at the time and gives some wacky dose. Then the pharmacist has to call them back so customer's don't DIE from incorrect dosing. But you don't realise how much checking and double-checking gets done in a pharmacy even for the rude, ungrateful people that continously return. All you see is some random person standing between you and your "rightful" medication. And insurance doesn't even make a difference- a lot of insurance companies will "approve" controlled medication almost a WEEK early even though it can't be dispensed that early. In the end whether or not you get your medication from the pharmacist comes down to the fact whether or not he or she feels comfortable with releasing it to you under his or her name, because any problems resulting from that medication being incorrect once it leaves that store falls on THEM and THEIR LICENSE. So if they have ANY question about it, they will withold it and if YOU don't like it then go call the on-call doctor for your doctor's office on a saturday and have them call you in another one somewhere else.

A pharmacist has the right to refuse to fill any prescription as long as the decision was not based on race, religion or national origin. Perhaps he reviewed the profile and did not like what he saw: too may controlled drugs, a possible allergy or duplication of therapy. There must be a reasonable explanation for this action.

There are times in which a phone in prescription sounds wrong. You have to verify the prescription with the doctor. Fridays are the worst because most doctor's offices close early and you have to wait until Monday.
If a pharmacy was out of stock on a medication on Friday, the next shipment doesn't arrive until Monday.

the pharmasist has the right to refuse to fill any Rx. It is also possible he/she didnt have that certain med to be able to fill. that happens to alot when they are slightly uncommon meds or ur in a small town. Happens to us all the time when i go to pick up mine at the pharmacy here in my town.

It doesn't sound like he refused it, it just sounds like it wouldn't be ready until then. It could quite simply be that they need to order it or it needs to be formulated. It certainly sounds like it's going to be filled, it just takes awhile for this one...I've certainly had it happen to me.
