I've heard people talk about this kind of music before but I have no idea what it is. Can you also name some bands that have this type of music?

Wow...you're going to get a lot of varied answers because ska means differently from person to person. So maybe a little history will help.

Ska is Jamaican dance music.

It started in Jamaica circa 1960 and it is the pre-cursor to reggae. Back then, ska was their take on Motown, but played on the ska beat.

The ska beat is a syncopated beat, or an off beat.

Rock is played on the beat:
1..2..3..4..1..2..3..4..

Ska is played on the off beat:
..1..2..3..4..1..2..3..4

So you get this sort of... "mmBop, mmBop, mmBop" sound to it.

By 1965, ska fell out of fashion and was replaced by the slower, rocksteady. By 1969, it was all over when reggae dominated Jamaican airwaves.

In 1979, a British musician by the name of Jerry Dammers decided to revive ska music, but with a bit punkier sound. And so The Specials were born, and ska became an overnight sensation in Great Britain.

And so, ska has existed ever since, all over the globe.

Some bands/artists to check out are:

The Skatalites
Prince Buster
Laurel Aitken
Desmond Dekker

The Specials
Madness
English Beat
The Selecter

The Toasters
Fishbone
The Untouchables
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

The Pietasters
Hepcat
The Slackers
No Doubt

Chris Murray
Deal's Gone Bad
Go Jimmy Go
The Dualers

Los Fabulosos Cadillacs
Desorden Publico
Almalafa
The Pepper Pots

Streetlight Manifesto. Best ever. Ska is a track style that originated in Jamaica within the past due Nineteen Fifties, and was once the precursor to rocksteady and reggae. Ska mixed factors of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. It is characterised by means of a jogging bass line accented with rhythms at the offbeat.
