According to the Constitution, the Vice President takes the helm. In the case of Nixon, after Agnew resigned, Ford was voted in as Vice President by Congress. When Nixon resigned, that placed Ford in the Oval Office. The Speaker of the House is supposed to be the 3rd in line.

The Vice President assumes the position of President if the President is unable to discharge his duties, resigns or dies in office. If there is no Vice President, the next in line is the Speaker of the House, followed by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, the Secretary of State, then down the cabinet ranks in the order in which those cabinet offices were established in time.

If the President is unable to carry out his duties, the job goes to the sitting Vice President. The Speaker is 3rd in line.

The Vice President would then be "in charge". The speaker of the house is a political mouth piece and carries alot of influence but very little real power.

President -- then VP -- then Speaker -- then President Pro Tem of the Senate -- then it descends through the cabinet.
The details are set by statute and changed a few years back when the DHS was created.

Don't worry, the chances of Nancy Pelosi taking over are lower than my being mistaken for Anna Nicole Smith. We'd have to oust Darth Cheney from office, then Bush before she could be president.
That's your fear, isn't it? Because I have a hunch you wouldn't have asked this when Denny Hastert was Speaker.
