Glucose is the common fuel for most living things. For each molecule of glucose oxidized all the way to CO2 and H2O, 36 ATP's are produced. Carbohydrates are digested to glucose, which is stored as glycogen. Excess glucose is converted to lipid for long term storage. Lipids are broken up into acetyl-CoA, which enters the Krebs Cycle to produce ATP. Proteins are digested to amino acids. There is no storage for amino acids. Excess amino acids are deaminated, and the carbon chains are converted to glucose and lipid.
