I cannot explain to you in full all of the events of the Hostage Crisis in Iran, and I will not turn your question into a political issue to put the blame on past Presidents, but I will provide you with with a link for further information.

Be careful when reading the answers given here about American History and Politics - there always seems to be some buffoons who spout their poltical bias.

Before the hostages were taken Iran had been in a revolution. The U.S. could have intervened and put down this revolution. President Carter decided not to help the leader of Iran. Reasoning that a democracy would be better than a dictatorship Carter let the revolution run it course. He even congratulated the new leader in Iran. The Iranians though held a deep hatred for the U.S. because in the 50's we had stopped another revolution by intervening on the side of the dictator.
A mob of students stormed our embassy and took the people in the embassy hostage. At first we thought it was just a mob and that the Iranian government would get the hostages free. As time went on we realized it was the Iranian government that was behind the hostage taking.
Oddly enough , Iran wouldn't give up the hostages as long as Carter was president. The man that really made it possible for there revolution to take place was forced out of office in disgrace by the very people he helped .

The Iranians captured the American embassy and everyone inside. They did it because they hated Americans for supporting a dictator inside of an imam (holy man) that the people respected. They held these people hostage for a long time.

Then Iran made a deal with Ronald Reagan to embarass President Carter. It involved getting a lot of weapons through Oliver North.

President Jimmy Carter DID NOT understand it either and as a result of his buffoonery, we are facing the challenges we face today with radical Islam because he did NOTHING in response to the taking over of the U.S. embassy in Tehran by the current president of Iran and a bunch of his goons way back in November of 1979
These are the same group of Islam that want to control the world and kill us today.
And yet, the Nobel committee gave this buffoon (Carter) a "Peace Prize" which is why it was said that " God so loved the world that he did not send a committee "
