Yes, he's right that these things are personal issues. But the Republican Party panders to a base who thinks that they should legislate morality. So GOP candidates toss the red meat of abortion, gay marriage, illegal immigration to the fundies before the election and then virtually ignore the issues afterwards, except to maybe pass/agitate for a bill or two to please them and keep them complacent.

I didn't know about Thompson's daughter. That's really sad.
I think the current crop of Republican candidates are not as able to lean on 'values' issues as earlier Republicans. For instance, after exploiting abortion as a wedge issue for 25 years, they've run it into the ground, they've really lost their credibility. So candidates today no longer promise to ban abortion, instead they say they personally believe abortion is wrong but that it's not something for government involvement.
I think the Terri Schiavo case really backfired on them so none of them even want to talk about it.

From Cheney gay daughter to W daughters not practicing absence and under age drinking Jena said on Larry King that absence was her father administration's policy and she was not a part of the administration and were not a part of the policy, to Fred daughter's mental illness, to Jeb Bush's daughter getting rehab instead of jail time ( second offense, and was found with a rock of cocaine in her shoe in rehab) , to Dan Quail daughter having abortion as a option, he's own words, it's a personal issue, it's only when it's your child they want to legislate morality.

Yea, I think it should be kept personal. And now, if the Republican hypocrites raise the issue again, a Republican will be on the side of the correct decision...something hard to find these days.

He's just one member of the GOP. Hell, Cheney has a gay daughter and has since changed his anti-gay views. When issues become personal, people often see things from a different perspective.

It was a personal issue till his party tried to move heaven and earth to grovel for the religious right. Who most of them HATE with a passion. Its very un-republican like to be rich and have to do the bidding of the nutcase, trailer-trash, christian right.

Fred's full of crap. It's his way to try to avoid the fact that he didn't know anything about Terry Schiavo. It still doesnt address his ignorance of the case. "Oh poor Fred. You shouldnt ask him any questions in case they are personal to him." Whatever. Uhhh..ah.....ahem...I hope I said uhhh....
