Yes, at school, we were always told to keep to the left when going up the stairs but on escalators, we're told to keep to the right so that people can walk up them on the left.

I am really shocked that everyone is telling you students walk anywhere! - when I was at school we always had to walk on the left - oh but that was when school kids did as they were told and there were rules in school - about half a century ago. Have things changed that much omg!

At schools in the UK it's as much as as anyone can do to make the buggers turn up and not set fire to the school and the staff.
Do you really think anyone's bothered which side of the corridors they walk down?

i live in england, and i can see why you asking the question, but over here its different basically in schools [well in my school] there isnt a right or wrong way to walk, you can walk whichever side you want.
i never knew that you did that in the US :)

That is the rule here in New Zealand as well drive on the left and walk up stairs on your left.

In the UK Students, people in the street, in stores, anywhere in fact, walk whichever side they want to. Total chaos in crowded areas!!

no people walk wherever they want,no jay walking laws, but i think that the rules of the road should apply keep to the right, and tourists should be banned from stopping dead in front of me LOL!

no idea what they do in schools, good question. you're right, we always stayed to the right tho I never really thought about it before.
from what i remember the pedestrian doesn't have the right of way like here in usa. (someone correct me if i'm wrong) u need to be more aware of traffic.
