Is it really all that different from that of Athens?

We are a representative republic -- with the representatives chosen democratically.

The difference is that Athens was a representative republic -- but the representatives were not elected democratically -- their voice and seat was based on wealth and status and caste.

Democracy began in Ancient Greece where all the male citizens over the age of 20 had the opportunity to vote. Unlike the United State's democracy, Ancient Greece had a "Direct Democracy" where every vote is tallied and counted, rather than our "Representative Democracy" where we vote for people and then they vote for us. The founders included Solon, Cleisthenes, and Ephialtes
