Maybe by analogy this can be better illustrated: The behavior of a loose boulder is to fall down under gravity. The injury to the victim could be bones broken. E. Coli bacteria may just be minding their own business, but the host can sicken and die from such behavior.
Specifically., though, e. coli bacteria helps with waste processing in the gut, but can be deadly if it finds its way outside of the gut, so that whether or not it's helpful or injurious depends on where it is.
