they don't bury well heads because they will eventually need maintenance they usually stick about 16 inches out of the ground and have a metal or plastic cap on top. people often cover them up with little ornamental things like fake wells and stuff. you often find them 5 to 50 feet from the house.

If you cant get any of the above to work try divining,,,, don't laugh !! yet ! what you need is a length of fence wire 8 gauge, you cut it about 500mm long 18" 2 of them u want, then about 100mm 4" from one end bend it to right angle, make both the same ... then hold the short ends very lightly in each fist and have your arms by your side so your fists are about 18" apart .. NOW here is the good part .. Have a cold beer then walk slowly around the yard and when the two wires turn by themselves and cross..... Yeh water!! But is it the well or a pipeline?? that is the question,, if it travels in a straight line , then its a pipe line follow it and you should find your well..IF the wires don't cross for you get your wife or mate to try sometimes it wont work for some as you dont have enough electricity in your body to do it. but don't fret about it ..have another cold beer and try again .. I guarantee it works, just not for some...

Go into your basement or crawl space. Find what wall your water line is entering your house. And go outside, find that point, and head strait out until you find it. Subterranean plumbing rarely takes any sharp turns. It should be only a matter of finding how far away from your house in that direction it is. Probably not much more than 50 feet or so.

You can contact your area's Department of Natural Resources... they keep a map of all the wells. (I know we had to report ours when it was dug, and discovered there was actually a third that had been covered over when the house was moved, heheh)
Quite often the well head will be disguised... a decorative 'wishing well', bird bath, etc may be covering it. Something that will hide the pipe coming up out of the ground, and yet be relatively easy to move, in the event it needs to be serviced.
Good Luck

The well head shouldn't be buried due to health. Water from rain, melting snow, etc, can run down into well and contaminate it.
The previous owners probably brought the yard up with landfill through the years, this is not good. You may have to add on to the well head and back fill with concrete to prevent seepage.

ask the old owner, or look for a company name on the pressure tank that may have installed the well and call them to see if they know where it might be.
