I mean seriously, the government is good for two things: building stuff and blowing stuff up, and even most of that work is contracted out. If the private sector destroys the government in everything, why don't we just let them do everything.

Size.

The bigger it is the harder it is to maintain. We should reduce the size of all government... but you have to be willing to take the "benefit" cuts that go along with smaller government.

g-day!

1. They hire people that others might not (and I'm not talking about anti-discrimination, they are required to employ differently abled people in certain positions, such as delivering internal mail, so certain jobs that might take 1 person in the private sector might require 3 people and a supervisor in government, but these are mainly low level positions).

2. Since there is no profit motive, they need to have artificial performance measures that are set by Congress, not people who are experts in the subject matter, so often the performance measures are not valid.

3. Since the performance measures are largely intangible, they need to have a lot of people tracking the performance measures.

4. Congress assigns all sorts of additional responsibilities, beyond the main purpose of the particular Agency.

5. All the rules make if very difficult to hire people or make capital purchases. Sometimes you need to hire people fast or make big purchases quickly (business does this all the time). The government has few mechanisms for this. In the Federal government it can take up to a year to hire someone with high level training and experience.

The government can't tell us what to do because the constitution we have makes us a democracy not a communist country. Our country is the most free country in the world. If it weren't for our government then you wouldn't be able to voice your opinion. Would you like it if the government told you everything where you would live where you would work, and even what religioned you are, so be glad for the freedoms you take for granted, because people die to get into this country.

Most of the government is involved with contracting things out to private business and with enforcing regulations on those businesses.

In general, I'd suggest that government is inefficient because it does things that cannot be done efficiently for profit so that private businesses don't do them.

If it were not inefficient, it would get a usable set of laws passed and be out of work. The rest of us would then find that we don't need that many people promising to do great things for us and failing miserably.

The best government is the least government that remains functional.

I believe it is the people in the government offices that are so inefficient. The "government" couldn't be inefficient if it didn't have help.

Because our leaders care more about their friends filling their pockets than our country or the taxpayers.
