it depends on the job. i agree that when the job is hazardous that for their own safety they need to check that their employees are not using drugs. I think it is done mostly for insurance purposes. after all most people if they do drugs have ways to beat the test or they quit long enough for their system to clear and get a clean test. also what is to stop the person from starting to do drugs after obtaining the job? yet I still feel it can be a deterrent from serious drug users applying for jobs they would be unsafe doing. great question

I feel it is a complete invasion of privacy, of what a person does with their free time - testing isn't as accurate as it should be, etc. I opposed it on those grounds when I had the con side of the debate in college (before it was an actuality). But then ..
... given the drug climate these days (meth, particularly) - I can't say that it isn't a good thing. I also wouldn't say that I'd not work for an employer that required it. I can't imagine some industries NOT having it.
I really don't want to work elbow to elbow with an addict.

When I was working our job required random drug tests, we were also drug tested before we were hired.
I'm not opposed to it, since it's better to know that employees are drug free. So Yes, I defend it as a good thing, if a person has nothing to hide then they have nothing to worry about.

I work as an insurance adjuster - because I deal with money- my employers have run credit checks and drug tests as part of the hiring process. A positive drug test indicates a drug habit - a drug habit is a motive for embezzlement. I have no problem taking a drug test for my job.

Drug-Free work place is one reason. ..dependability is another or how about safety....
I have nothing to hide so it would not bother me. As for " prefer to rely on my reputation and integrity." based on what previous employers ??? (They can not give you a negative reference) Based on family they more than likely want you to have a job. Based of friends..there your friends and will help you in any way.
A drug test is just one way they decide a background check is another.
Drug test have advanced beyond peeing in a cup...a blood sample and a hair follicle test.
but on the flip side
you don't have to use drugs to be a bad employee..you could do worse in your spare time..

They have the right to ask, because they have the right to establish a drug free workplace. But I would never take a job that would invade my privacy this way. Even though I don't take drugs and have nothing to fear from the test, I prefer to rely on my reputation and integrity. I don't need to give blood to prove my worth as an employee.

As an employer, I am responsible for everything that happens in my shop. You come in hung over or still riding the effect of a little mary jane (THC binds to your fat cells and stays with you up to a whole 30 days), get injured, and I and my insurance are responsible?
I don't test. But then, I don't have to. I have VERY high standards and expectations. When you work for me, you also represent me -- even when you're not at work and are off the clock.

I'm for it. Many people are working in areas that are dangerous and drug testing prevents accidents. They should also not be in an area where sensitive material is the norm, or in management positions, or working with customers, or driving company vehicles. There are a gazillion reasons to drug test.

They should give drugs tests. If your mom, dad, grandma, etc..... lived in a nursing home don't you want those employees to be tested? What about the teachers where you send your kids to school? There's alot of cops on the street they should be tested too. Having a house built? Do you want the electrician doped up and have your huose burn down with your family in it because he was too out of it to do his/ her job? Alot of truck drivers on the road. I don't want some big *** truck running me down because he/she is under the influence. Heck ya, every employer should do a drug test on their employees.

My husband is an ironworker (builds bridges, buildings, etc.). They have monthly random drug & alcohol tests. Suppose someone operating a crane, drunk or drugged presses a wrong button and kills someone. Or one of the men forgets to "tie-off" and fall from the sky.
I do believe in testing with my hubby's line of work.
