I'm pretty sure the Iraqi death toll is at around a hundred thousand now, not a million. I know, splitting hairs here.

People are naive, but a heaping dose of ethnocentrism certainly doesn't hurt to keep the war effort going.

It's the same thing that happened with Vietnam. Over 50,000 Americans died over there but few people seem to notice or even care that as many as 4 million Vietnamese people died during this war. Many people just don't seem to notice or even care about others who come from a different country and have a different culture. Somehow, people seem to become less human if they aren't just like them.

It's not the numbers that are important. Even one is too many if that One is your son, your daughter. your brother, your sister, your father , your mother or anyone else you love. Arguing about whether it's a 1000, a hundred thousand or a million reveals the cruelty and the callousness of those who would wage war for their own financial benefit.
What have we as a society become? Hundreds of millions dead and maimed over the last century in countless wars and skirmishes and still we cry for more war and brutality. Have we become such barbarians?
As for Doris Lessing, she should be ashamed of herself. As a Nobel Laureate, I would have thought she had more human compassion but perhaps all that fame made her arrogant.
