You definitely want a will and medical power of attorney, since it's not granted automatically with domestic partnerships.

Assuming that you live in the US...

You can have a medical directive, but if you live in or travel to a state that has a law that says it does not recognize same sex marriage you should check the wording of that law; for example, if it states some like or similar to "A legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized" the health directive may not be recognized.

You can also have a will, but unlike married individuals it could be subject to taxation (including a jointly owned home).

The best thing to do would be to consult with a lawyer to see what options are available including possible power of attorney for your partner, although (unfortunately) nothing can give you the same rights as marriage. Even in Massachusetts, which offers state marriage, federal taxation on inheritance still applies.

The only option to give you the same rights as marriage would be to move to a country that grants same sex marriage, such as Canada.

edit> Since you opposite genders, the law would view you as in a common law marriage after a certain number of years (usually 7) which would give you marriage rights.
