I can not figure out how to solve

20 X 10 to the fifth power + 4 X 10 to the sixth power

I know I seem really stupid, but I came in right when class was dismissed, and she just handed me the worksheet. I don't know how to solve it, and I'm not good at math in the first place. Can anyone help? I don't even need the answer, just if someone could tell me how to go about solving it. Thanks very much! =)

You write out the components, and perform the operations in operator order. Do the powers first, then the multiplications, then the addition.
20 * 10^5 + 4 * 10^6

Of course, there's something interesting you may have noticed right off the bat. 20*10^5 is equal to 2*10^6.

So you have
2*10^6 + 4*10^6
= 6*10^6
= 6,000,000

20 X 10 to the fifth power + 4 X 10 to the sixth power=

you have 2 terms that have different powers, to be able to add them, you need to change one of them to order 6

20 X 10 to the fifth power = 2 X 10 to the power 6

now we can add to get

2 X 10 to the power 6 +4 X 10 to the sixth power =
6 x 10 to the power 6 = 6,000,000

Multiplying by 10 to the fifth power means move the decimal point 5 places to the right, or if the number is a whole number, add five zeros. And 10 to the sixth would add six zeros. So just do that then add them up.

Why were you so late?
You have to move the decimal to coincide.
So change the first number to:
2 X 10 to the sixth power.
Now add to the 4 X 10 to the sixth.

= (20 * 10^5) + (4 * 10^6)
Now, you can proceed from here.
