This bone that could have been my tail ain't earning its keep imho. As far as I can tell it doesnt do anything. Any coccyx supporters out there ?

the coccyx protects the cauda equina where it begins it's departure from the spinal cord. it is not a "tail"

No, but I've broken mine several times, and it's really, really painful!
I suppose it could be a sort of protection for the otherwise base of your spine, absorbing all the shock of landing on your buttocks, so the main part of your spine doesn't get damaged?
I broke mine for the first time at school doing long jump! I managed to land on my rear end instead of my feet!
I'm sure my spine was protected by this otherwise useless piece of bone, even if my dignity wasn't!
