Just b/c he's gay doesn't mean he's a molester.

I think it's sweet and pretty cool. However, I do NOT agree with the people that said it was all a media ploy to get people interested in the books again. I really believe JK takes the integrity and personalitites of her characters very seriously and isn't going to just make something up that she never thought of before to sell more books after the fact. Besides, the information doesn't really change anything about the books or the plot, or the fact that it's ended. :( :(
I think it was a lilttle inside tidbit for the true hardcore HP fans (like me)
I think it's great that he is by the way. Not just because he was gay, but because he never had a relationship or partner or anything romantic through all the books, nor was it even hinted at, so to know that he had true love once, and was forced to kill him for the greater good, and then never loved again, well, that's just kind of sad and romantic and sweet all at the same time. I don't care what sexuality was involved, love that great is just.....epic

I was shocked at first, because it is soo ironic that he would be gay. I'd have to say tho, good thing JK didn't reveal this in the book because many fans might not have loved him as much. Now that i know, im supprised that it doesnt change the fact that i still love him and that he is my favourite character from the books (along with snape:P).

I think i know why this has shocked us a lot. Harry Potter is such a distant story from the real world, although you may relate to it...Harry Potter is far greater than our world. When JK announced that Dumbledore was gay, this pulled some of the readers to realise that actual Harry Potter Series is part of this world and was made from our world. It showed the readers that even the greatest of stories began here....in our boring old world.

The real question is...what signafigance does it make to make dumbledore gay? What was JK's meaning?

thoose are my thoughts =)

In memory of dumbledore, snape, and dobby.(F)R.i.p.

My parents thought I would be mad, but I wasn't. Dumbledore is still a cool character and it doesn't matter what his sexual orientation is. I think J.K. Rowling meant to wait about telling this because if it was stated right off, not that many people would have read the books. It would also take away from the character to some readers (not me). So I actually think it was a smart move to keep the secret till the books were done.

P.S.-I hate it when people call them children's books. In my eyes they are not. They include death, some mild language, and things 10 year olds (or younger) could understand. If they are aimed for childern, why are the movies rated PG-13?

JK Rowling says that Dumbledore was always gay- so finding out now shouldn't change the way we felt about him during the book. it is only a character trait that hardly affects the story. The way she mentioned it is probably to get attention, but I do believe that she develops deep, complex characters and he just turned out to be gay. The other characters could just as easily hide secrets.
As for it being "inapropriate for kids" get over it! The characters in the book are very real, and there are gay people in real life! Not to mention that there are many other adult things in the books, and that his being gay can be tottaly overlooked in the story! As for catholics who believe being gay is wrong- if you didn't remember, witchcraft is also cosidered wrong in the bible.
One more thing- and I'm suprised that I have to point this out, but straight teachers could just as easily be "pedifiles".

at first I couldn't believe it and thought it made no sense but looking back at the books I think it is a great thing and it changes a lot of peoples minds towards how gay people may be portrayed as.

It made sense to me, I remember reading how he was Inflamed by the other wizard and thinking how there was something more going on there. Unfortunately for me it also killed a big part of the joy of the series for me. I guess I was hoping it would continue to be about innocence and family and love. I guess I'm glad she didn't make him a villan him and then make him gay, but at the same time I don't think it had to be pointed out. I just don't see how it had to be made an issue, why it couldn't be left to the privacy of the character and the reader.

Not that I have anything against him being gay, but honestly, though it seems intriguing, why did she just reveal this now? I somehow feel kind of annoyed at this "revelation" as it was unnecessary, and could just be a spur of the moment idea from J.K. Rowling. Much as I admire her, I can't help but think that this is just a ploy to get attention, don't you think?

This announcement doesn't change any of my thoughts on the books because they have all been written, published and read. As Moody/Bartry Jr said "Peoriod, end of story." She created all of the characters and they are what she chooses to do with them. But I must take issue with people saying that his lack of romantic involvement with women made them suspect he was gay. If that theory holds true then do you think Dudley is gay? how about Mr. Filch?, McGonnagal? Trewalny? or Voldemort? But these are her characters to do as she pleases. I do think that she did this for media attention and gay activisim though, and here is why. She announced Dumbledore's queerness on American soil where homesexuality is not welcomed as much in her own country. If she announced it there it probably wouldn't have even been a blip on the media screen. In her interviews she seems to bask in the American Evangelical Christian's dislike of her books because of the witchcraft aspect of her creatition and this would be a further stab at them from her pen. So I must question if this was the character's sexuality to begin with...but I digress because she created the character.
I always thought he was attracted to Professor McGonnagal by the way they interacted, and in "The Goblet of Fire" book and film there seemed to be a sexual electricity in his introducing to Madam Maximame....and what's her name that ran the Pub in Hogsmeade? it seemed he made a few references that indicated that he met her after hours on occasion and that she always provided a special bottle of liquor to him at Christmas.
If we are to take interactions or lack of interactions of the characters to guess their sexuality then Dudley, and etc. are gay. Dumbledore's brother and perhaps Hagrid maybe even Voldemort had sex outside of their species....sigh what a can of worms JK Rowling has opened. Tonks having sex with a werewolf and who knows what other things have happened with witches and wizards did while being animagus.
I do think this announcement and her motivations do cheapen the memories of the book because I do believe she did this in the name attention and activisim. but again they are hers.
Discuss all of these if you wish. I, for one, liked the series but they are over, period, end of story.

I think that if that´s the fact, it´s no ones problem, cause the book is not about kids being molested or anything like it, so, the important thing is what Dumbledore did to help Harry against Lord Voldemort, I thought of him like a caring father more than like a fag.

just because he was gay it doesn't mean it would be obvious, besides i think he had a little crush on Grindelwald, and besides we don´t know what happened behind close doors
