We recently read Into The WIld, by Jon Krakhauer (sp), in my AP English class. We are now required to do a visual aide project (i.e.- powerpoint, collages, paintings, sculptures, videos, etc.) to illustrate one of the five goals of the novel. They are:
1. The allure of high risk activites on men of a certain age.
2. The charged relationship between father and son.
3. The montastic tendencies of McCandless's trip.
4. Krackhaur's inner exploration of himself.
5. The grip nature has on the American imagination.

Does anyone have any good ideas I could use? I can't paint, and I can sculpt only moderately well. Any help will be much appreciated!

What a project. I just finished reading this book too, and then saw the movie. I have a quite lot in common with Chris McCandless. Terrible relationship with my father, went to Alaska after I graduated and went out into the backcountry in Denali National Park, didn't know exactly what I was doing but was thrilled to take the risks and survive them. Faced grizzly bears, did white water. The story really hit home with me and I cried.

Enough of the personal qualifications to answer this question.

Answer: Most people are going to do number 1 or 5 on this project. It was set up that way, that 1 or 5 would be the easy ways out. But depending on how much you're allowed to talk as you go through a powerpoint or collage or whatever, 1 and 5 become the only options with accessible, powerful images. I mean how do you effectively visually convey a strained relationship, inner exploration, or monastic tendencies?

If I were you, I'd do a powerpoint that begins with one of the quotes in the book. I forget which chapter it was, but it starts with describing a craving for nature, and ends with "and that road has always led west." I don't have the book with me, but you can find it.

Then I would find some of the highest digital quality photographs you can from various sources (cite them all at the end), and go through a bunch of pictures that will attempt to speak to the beauty of the western U.S. I would also be inclined to comment that if you haven't actually gone out there, seen it for yourself and hiked around, it's like seeing a picture of a big steak without ever having eaten steak. It's appealing only to the degree one can relate to the appeal.

Good luck.
