Here is an old Teen Scene article about LA:

o your teen wants to be a rock and roll star…but he/she won't legally be able to drive a band van for several more years. On your family trip to Los Angeles, you could take your child to such glossy tourist stops as the Hard Rock Cafe (8600 Beverly Blvd., 310/276-7605), the ersatz-bayou-shack known as the House of Blues (8430 Sunset Strip, 213/650-1451), or stop in at the Virgin MegaStore (8000 Sunset Blvd., 213/650-8666), for the latest cds. But why not visit some of the places where your budding Alannis/Beck can rub elbows with the pierced and tattooed appendages of their heroes and other wannabes? This rock and roll route will take you to places where the aspiring hang on the cheap, and the successful shmooze and shop.

Located kitty-corner to the infamous The Viper Room, Duke'sCoffee Shop (8909
Sunset Blvd., 310/652-3100) plays host every morning to rockers whose mashed hairdos indicate they just rolled out of bed. The food is standard coffee shop fare, but the portions are generous. Check out the wall covered with stickers from local bands -- most of them defunct. Because of the restaurant's small size (you'll be sharing long tables with other diners), be prepared for a wait on weekends. Duke's does serve lunch and dinner -- but I've never heard of anyone [cool] going there for it.

Move east on your rock and roll extravaganza to Hollywood's Rock Walk (7435 Sunset Blvd., 213/874-1060), a collection of hand prints and memorabilia from such rock greats as Les Paul, Van Halen, and Johnny Cash. Then check out the adjoining Guitar Center, a veritable department store of music. While I was there,I observed a rocker-dad encouraging his toddler to finger a chord on a mini electric guitar. Talk about being groomed for the family business…

Forgot to pack your toothbrush? Pop into the nearby "Rock and Roll" Ralph's Supermarket (5257 Sunset Blvd., 213/874-6333), which caters to the neighborhood's skinny-black-jeans crowd. You'll know it because it's near the "Rock and Roll" Denny's (7373 Sunset Blvd., 213/876-6660).

Drive up to the Beachwood Canyon neighborhood (clearly marked off Franklin Avenue), home to many rockers (Madonna was stalked here). Not only is it a quaint mix of architectural styles ranging from austere Tudor to plain ugly, but if you keep going up (follow the signs to the LAFD Heliport) you'll get as close to the famous Hollywood sign as you can without meeting rattle snakes face-to-face.

Is your teen hungry AGAIN? Try Joseph's Café (1775 N. Ivar St., 213/462-8697),
located around the corner from the famously round Capitol Records building.
This Greek/Mediterranean restaurant serves business lunches to rock greats like Flea and members of Cracker.

But let's get down to what your teen is really good at…spending money. The hottest entertainment and shopping area in Los Angeles is Vermont Avenue in the Los Feliz neighborhood. There, your child can find the latest in baggy guys' fashions at X-Large, and the popular "teenage waitress look" at the adjoining X-Girl (1768 & 1766 N. Vermont Avenue, 213/666-3483). Partially owned by Mike D of the Beastie Boys and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, the shops get a dose of hip hop/rap from the record store Fat Beats located upstairs. Regular customers include Kool Keith, Raekwon, and Jeru. Vermont Avenue features vintage and hipster-oriented clothing stores and novelty emporiums. Your child may want to stay for hours.

But hurry him along because you want to show your teen what an LP record is at Rockaway Records (2395 Glendale Blvd., Silverlake, 213/664-3232). There you'll find a large selection of used albums and singles, as well as the latest cds to please your kid.

Moving west on the last leg of our tour, your kid will definitely want to visit Atomic Garage (7379 Melrose Ave., 213/651-3487), the hottest place for skateboarding/snowboarding equipment and radical clothing. Afterwards, stop at Wacko (7400 Melrose Ave., 213-651/5587) and the adjoining Soap Plant for wind-up toys, novelty postcards, fancy soaps…all the paraphernalia teens accumulate to define their territory. Parental guidance is suggested in these stores, however, as some of the products offered can be risqué. Finish your Melrose excursion with a trip to one of Los Angeles' most expensive vintage clothing stores Aardvark's Odd Ark (7579 Melrose Ave., 213/655-6769). Soon your kid will be wearing the appliquéd bell-bottoms you gave away years ago.

Now that your teen is shopped out, they'll want a new look to go with those new clothes. Make an appointment at Delux Beauty Parlor (727 N. Fairfax Ave., 213-658-8585). Here rockers get their hair dyed and cut to (dis)order. It's rumored that Drew Barrymore gets her eyebrows waxed pencil-thin here…

We've come to the end of your rock and roll tour. Unless parents are feeling particularly expansive and will accompany their teen to one of the Sunset Strip's all-ages clubs like the Roxy (9009 Sunset Blvd., 310/276-2222), favorite showplace for local bands to earn their chops, or the dark Whiskey - A - Go - Go (8901 Sunset Blvd., 310/535-0579), former showcase for such rockers as The Doors, Cream, and Talking Heads.

Good luck and ROCK ON!

I stay in l. a. yet i infrequently do any of the stuff u stated. On college days i bypass 2 college and are available homestead and do homework. On weekends i carry out with acquaintances on the mall and flicks. throughout summer season we bypass 2 the sea coast and stuff yet purely throughout summer season except u want 2 freeze. i do no longer many times bypass to Hollywood Blvd reason I purely see a highway w/ stars on the sidewalk. it relatively is relatively no longer something particular. people social gathering at seashores throughout summer season and spring ruin different than that they social gathering at homestead. I save at affordable shops yet u can discover constructive shops right here like Ambercrombie and holister and shops like that. i'm 15 and that i do no longer call it socal the two.
