Well, among other things it's in the Constitution -- 6th Amendment -- "to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation".

It's also a Due Process issue from the 5th and 14th, so I'm sure at least one or more federal cases have said that or something equivalent.

don;t kjnwo that particular quote - cut/paste it into google for goodness sakes - but the principle is called "habeus corpus" and has been part of our legal tradition dating to the Magna Carta in 1215 or even earlier.

Yes 1215, that is not a typo.
