Only as a consumer.
And what would happen depends on who you are -- if you are a retailer or manufacturer and remove the tags before the consumer buys the mattress -- that's punishable.
If you are a consumer ("Not to be removed except by consumer") -- then nothing.

I refuse to answer on the grounds that my answer may tend to incriminate me...
Read the tag. It should say that it must not be removed by anyone other than the purchaser/consumer or something to that effect. If you are not going to resell the mattress, remove away.

Yes, once I have bought and paid for it then it's mine and I can do what ever I want to it.
Nothing will happen to you if you own the mattress. But if you don't own it you could go to jail for destroying the stores property.
