The screen on my Gateway MX3210 laptop , approximately 18 months old, "died" - blacked out.

When I unplugged it and hooked it up to an independent monitor, the display appeared correctly on the monitor. Then I was able to toggle back the display on the laptop.

However, when I plugged the power cord back in, the laptop's display once again went black.

So... running on battery is okay and I can use the laptop's display. Running from the power supply causes the laptop's screen to go blank.

There are no apparent signs of any burn in from being kept on a single image too long.

And yes, I did re-start.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

If it's still under warranty I'd send it in for repair (if it's out of warranty it probably won't be worth repairing).

If not then it might be the brightness of the screen (laptop screens usually dim on battery) so I'd try turning down the brightness but that's clutching at straws really.

Sounds like the inverter for your LCD back light is going out. I have seen this frequently. It will heat up and "break down" then fail. It will happen more slowly or not at all when on battery power because by default your display is dimmed when on battery.

did you try seeing the the power management settings on your laptop?

it could be that two different settings are on your notebook- one for battery and one for external power.

try going to.- display settings- screensaver- change power settings- and see if its correct.
